The majority (63%) of healthcare organizations, both biopharmaceutical and medtech, already have connected health products on the market or in the development phase. Regardless of the stage of development of their products, healthcare organizations expect connected health to contribute more than a fifth of their total revenue within five years, although a lack of critical data capabilities could hinder this goal.

This is clear from the latest report from the Capgemini Research Institute, ‘The Connected Health Revolution’, according to which three in five healthcare organizations are developing a roadmap to integrate generative AI and more than half are already testing this technology to interact with patients and healthcare professionals.

While about half of organizations believe their connected health efforts have intensified, most admit that strong data management capabilities are still lacking. Despite having an approach to connected health based on a more developed strategy and extensive planning, compared to what was happening three years ago, research confirms that there is a general lack of common framework, standards and tools for data management in relation to connected health.

According to Thorsten Rall, Global Head of Healthcare at Capgemini: “Healthcare organizations, across the biopharmaceutical industry and medical technology, are making progress to fully benefit from the potential of connected health. Unleashing the power of health data and harnessing the possibilities presented by cutting-edge technologies such as generative AI will be at the heart of this connected health revolution because they can accelerate drug discovery, improve patient care and foster innovation. in the provision of healthcare. “In this way, establishing solid data-driven frameworks will be key to ensuring that data is accessible and reliable, laying the foundation for the advanced AI analytics and generation of insights necessary to reinvent healthcare.”

Capgemini has defined the term “connected health” as the value brought at the intersection of digital and healthcare. Connected health in medtech encompasses a robust set of offerings ranging from implantable and wearable devices to capital medical equipment, and the digital and data ecosystems that surround and power everything from diagnostics to remote care, procedures and post-procedure care.

Connected health increases in biopharma and medical technology

The report also concludes that The number of biopharmaceutical organizations with connected health products has multiplied by six eligible for commercialization in 2021. While preventive care and physical exercise remain top priorities for most biopharmaceutical organizations, there is increasing emphasis on previously neglected areas such as diagnosis and monitoring.

Oncology, immunology and cardiology are the main focuses of attention for most biopharmaceutical companies, and emerging areas such as mental health, diabetes, obesity and dermatology, also show tremendous growth from 2021.

Connected health also remains a priority for medical technology organizations. So, three out of four admit that they already have connected health products on the market or in the development phase. Digital health solutions and devices wearables are your main areas of interest.

The implementation of data and AI grows

According to the report, biopharmaceutical organizations have made considerable progress in leveraging Artificial Intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML) and Cloud in the last three years. As a result, biopharmaceutical organizations that use AI for predictive analysis of real-time data from connected healthcare products, have almost doubled since 2021, going from 24% to 46%. Additionally, the report notes that more than two-fifths (42%) also have a Cloud platform for integrating data from different sources.

However, only a minority of healthcare organizations surveyed mentioned that they had an adequate supply of technical skills such as AR/VR and generative AI. To bridge this gap, almost two-thirds of organizations admit that they prefer to upskill their current workforce, while 56% are in favor of hiring new talent.

Healthcare organizations are testing a wide variety of generative AI use cases

lGenerative AI has the potential to contribute across the entire healthcare value chainincluding research, clinical development, operations, regulatory, compliance, commercialization and post-launch operations.

The report reveals that More than half of organizations are currently testing generative AI for interactions with patients and healthcare professionals.while they are also experimenting with applications of generative AI to produce synthetic data, analyze existing data, automate documentation and reporting, manage suppliers, design products and identify sites for clinical trials.

While connected health offers new opportunities for the industry, healthcare organizations need to establish a clear vision and tailor offerings to specific healthcare and wellness needs so they can provide measurable impact, the report concludes. Invest in the development of a scalable, secure and compliant data infrastructureand strengthening collaboration with other stakeholders in the ecosystem, will also allow them to generate tangible value for all stakeholders.
