The Spanish Association against Cancer (AECC) in Malaga has taken to the streets alongside patients, volunteers and partners in their traditional Charity collection -fundraising day- to ask for the collaboration of the entire society with the aim of promoting cancer research, exceeding the 70% survival rate and continuing to provide support and accompaniment services to people with cancer and their families.

Given this reality, and to reach all patients and families who need it, as well as contribute to improve prevention and the cancer diagnosis, the support of the entire society as a whole is essential. For this reason, every second Thursday in May the AECC deploys its usual fundraising campaign throughout Spain, to request the collaboration of citizens.

And it is necessary to continue promoting the oncology research and that your investment translates into responding to the needs of sick people. That is, patients have guaranteed access to research results, allowing everyone to access the most innovative medicine and treatments, regardless of where they live.

More than 3,330 tables throughout Spain

The traditional charity collection will have this year more than 3,330 tables spread throughout Spain and with more than 12,000 volunteers so that the entire society can participate in the cause by contributing their donations and thus joining the ‘All Against Cancer’ initiative. Furthermore, on this occasion, in addition to using traditional piggy banks, the collection is renewed with digital piggy banks, offering new forms of collaboration.

Fundraising day in Malaga

As they did last year, the volunteers from the provincial headquarters of Malaga and of his 14 locations locals (Estepona, Marbella, Fuengirola, Mijas, Benalmádena, Torremolinos, Rincón de la Victoria, Torrox, Nerja, Antequera, Ronda, Alhaurín de la Torre, Álora and Coín) have also taken to the streets this Thursday to raise awareness in society of the importance of continuing research against cancer and to raise donations that help continue increasing its annual contribution to oncological research.

The AECC in Malaga has highlighted that “thanks to the efforts of its members and the generosity of Malaga society, the Malaga headquarters was consolidated in 2023 as the Andalusian provincial headquarters that allocated the most money to research“, with a total of 641,656 euroswhich also makes it the seventh in Spain by volume of money contributed to oncological research.

“A fact worth highlighting, if we take into account that the amount contributed in the last three years is around 2 million euros,” they add. Far from being satisfied with this important effort, the Provincial Council of the Spanish Association Against Cancer in Malaga has approved the creation of a new predoctoral aid which will be delivered in 2024, equipped with 24,500 euros per year for three years, extendable for a quarter. This new aid is added to the two existing ones from last year, for an annual amount of 25,100 euros each and for a maximum period of four years as well. All the money from these predoctoral grants goes to projects carried out in Malaga.

202 tables in the province of Malaga

The Spanish Association Against Cancer in Malaga has installed 202 tables in the province with about 500 volunteers and collaborators. Of them, about 60 will be installed in the capital of Malaga and the rest will be distributed among the 14 local offices and 37 other municipalities in the province.

Thanks to volunteers and collaborators, the Spanish Association Against Cancer has been present in 52 municipalities with its tables and piggy banks. From ten in the morning, the association’s volunteers will be at the main tables of each headquarters accompanied by authorities and collaborators to show their support.

On behalf of the administrations, Javier Salas Ruiz, subdelegate of the Government in Malaga, attended; Patricia Navarro, delegate of the Government of the Junta de Andalucía in Malaga; Carlos Bautista, Health delegate of the Government of Andalusia in Malaga; Ruth Sarabia, delegate of Social Inclusion, Youth, Families and Equality of the Junta de Andalucía in Malaga; Mayor or Francisco Cantos, Councilor for Social Rights and Equality of the Malaga City Council; Toñi Ledesma, third vice president of the Provincial Council of Malaga and Jorge Asensio Berges, Lieutenant Commander, was also present, since the Navy is in charge of always installing the main accounting table in Malaga.

Objective: achieve 70% cancer survival

The Spanish Association Against Cancer leads the ‘Everyone against cancer’ initiative with the aim of exceed 70% survival in 2030. Currently, thanks to research, the survival rate in men is 55.3% and in women it is 61.7%.

In 2030, the Association launched the largest call for aid of its history: ‘AECC 70% Survival Challenge’, of 10 million euros, to contribute to the research of those cancers that have a low or stagnant survival rate, that is, less than 30%.

Currently, the Association is the social and private entity that allocates the most funds to cancer research and supports the most researchers. In total, it has an investment of 114 million euros allocated to 603 research grants in development to increase survival in different types of cancer. In 2023, 29.4 million were awarded to 233 new grants.

Thanks to the support of Spanish society, the AECC has been promoting cancer research for more than 50 years, trying to respond to the greatest challenges in cancer in our country and promoting the talent of researchers who today lead cancer research inside and outside our borders.

Respond to patient needs comprehensively

During the year 2023, the team of professionals and volunteers of the Spanish Association Against Cancer served 212,662 people. Of them, 48,590 patients and family members were treated through the psychological care service; 32,436, for social needs; 8,616, in the medical-health care service; and 123,020 people have benefited from the support and accompaniment service.

According to data from the Observatory of the Spanish Association against Cancer, in 2023, 591 new cases were diagnosed in Spain per 100,000 inhabitants, which represents a total of 284,081 people diagnosed with cancer.

In the world, it is estimated that there will be 21.6 million cases in 2030, of which more than 317,000 will be in Spain, where currently a person is diagnosed with cancer every 2 minutes.

The Spanish Cancer Association continues to work to address the different realities related to the process, from a comprehensive and multidisciplinary point of view, alleviating the impact that the disease has on the entire family unit.
