Context

Currently the Region of the Americas is the most affected by diabetes in the world. In just 30 years the number of people with diabetes increased from 18 million in 1980 to 62 million in 2014. In 2019, diabetes (excluding diabetic kidney disease) was the sixth leading cause of death, the second leading cause of years of life adjusted disability (DALY) and the second leading cause of years lived with disability (YLD). This alarming increase in the burden of diabetes reflects insufficient prevention, late diagnosis and poor metabolic control and is directly related to the also increasing prevalence of its main risk factors: overweight, obesity and physical inactivity. Unfortunately, with prevalences of 63% and 39%, respectively, our Region is the most obese and inactive in the world.

In response to the alarming increase in the burden of diabetes, in April 2021 the World Health Organization (WHO) launched the Global Diabetes Pact. The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) assumed the leadership of its implementation in the Region of the Americas with the objective of raising awareness about the disease and improving access and quality of health care for people with diabetes, especially those belonging to to the most vulnerable populations. To help accelerate the implementation of the Global Diabetes Pact in the countries of the Region of the Americas, PAHO is organizing a hybrid event for Tuesday, November 14, 2023 in commemoration of World Diabetes Day.

This event will include the participation of authorities from the Ministry of Health of Mexico and the State Secretariats of Health, representatives of the Ministries of Health of countries in the Region of the Americas, the PAHO Representation in Mexico, the regional office in Washington and the WHO Noncommunicable Diseases Unit in Geneva.
